The Mastermind (2025)

“It’s not stealing if you don’t get caught.”

Directed by the quietly brilliant Kelly Reichardt, one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American independent cinema.

Set in 1970s Massachusetts, the film begins with a seemingly simple premise: an ordinary man (J. B. Mooney played by Josh O’Connor) plans an art heist at a small museum. But if you know Reichardt’s work you’ll know this won’t be a slick (blah) Hollywood caper. Her films are known for their quiet tension, subtle humour, and close attention to everyday lives. Rather than spectacle, she finds drama in small decisions, awkward silences, and the fragile confidence of people who may be in over their heads.

With The Mastermind, Reichardt takes the familiar idea of the “perfect crime” and filters it through her unique style—creating a heist story that’s less about the robbery itself and more about the people behind it, and the unpredictable ways even the best-laid plans can come undone.
