2022 Award Winners

2022 Award Winners

Grand Winner $3000 (Brown Brothers, Chandon, Christmont, Judd Family, KVA)

Awarded to: Jaqueline Macleish, The Northo’ Wangaratta (135)

An honest painting. A bit under painted and not totally resolved, which adds to its charm. It has an unusual atmosphere and potential narratives.

Oil/Acrylic $1000 (Hargraves)

Awarded to: Luke Adams, Self-Portrait with Hoodie (6)

Oil/Acrylic $750 (Friends of the Art Show)

Awarded to: Sharon Barry, Standing Tall (14)

A very fresh and confident painting of a quintessentially Australian landscape. It reminded me of the drive from Melbourne through the countryside.

Pastel $1000 (Pizzini)

Awarded to: Ricky Schembri, Across from the Merri View Gallery (221)

This work depicts a space that you could pass by every day and not notice. The scale is impressive with loose confident mark making.

Pastel $600 (Friends of the Art Show)

Awarded to: Stephen McCall, Golden Hills, Whitlands (147)

Cinematic and moody. Very competent tonality and colour range.

Work on Paper $1000 (King River Brewing)

Awarded to: Jo Briscomb, Misty Morning, Bobinawarrah (27)

A stunning drawing. The artist has really honoured their materials, working the charcoal into the paper, rubbing back, smudging, leaving a residue.

Work on Paper $600 (Friends of the Art Show)

Awarded to: Carolyn Marrone, Just Chilling (141)

Quietly humourous subject, really well executed, leaves you wondering about the story.

Watercolour/Gouache $750 (Super Axe)

Awarded to: Jenny Wallace, Winter at Lake William Hovel (270)

Highly skilled, confident understanding of the materials.

Watercolour/Gouache $600 (Friends of the Art Show)

Awarded to:Carmel Star, Abandoned (231)

A naive and charming work.

Printmaking $750 (Ovens & King Builders)

Feels lighthearted with confident lines.

Awarded to: Fran O’Neill, Untitled (182)

Bold performance of bodily gesture

Tony Judd Memorial Award, Local Artist $1000 (Judd Family)

Awarded to: Julie Hooper, Haze (86)

A playful and layered painting which stood out in a room of more representational work. The artist has used a variety of marks and materials that move across the surface beautifully.

Barb Sartori Memorial Award, King Valley Theme $1000 (KVA)

Awarded to: Andrew Sinclair, Soft Edges (228)

More than depicting the landscape, this painting successfully renders a feeling of place.

MAYOR FOR A DAY

MAYOR FOR A DAY By Damian Callinan

Friday 18th November 2022, 7.00PM at Edi Upper Hall, Edi

Tickets $30 includes a supper provided by the Edi Upper Hall Committee after the show.
Bar & doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start. Drinks at bar prices.

The popularly unelected Damian Callinan is slipping on the mayoral robes for 24 hours to run his comedic eyes over your town. After the one-man, public service campaigner has taken in all he can, he’ll rock up to the hall armed only with a projector and a microphone. His ironclad campaign promise is that the council chambers will be ringing with the constituent’s laughter as he reports his findings at this very unofficial council meeting.

Combining photos, observations, municipal advice, community interactions, colourful yarns and his uncanny eye for seeing things that the locals don’t, Callinan will have the town thinking he’s been residing there for a year rather than a day.

“Damian Callinan’s Mayor for a Day is that perfect performance combo of hilarity and community.”
Xavier Dannock. Lighthouse Theatre

Damian has a unique way of disarming the audience and flipping the funnies back onto them. It was an absolute delight to see our local community laughing together with and at themselves. A total celebration of local stories.”
Susie Lyons, Glenelg Shire Council (2022)

Damian Callinan is a multi award winning comedian, actor & writer. He is best known to TV/film audiences for his roles on Skithouse, Before The Game & Backyard Ashes & regular guest appearances on shows such as Spicks and Specks & the Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala.

Waves by Alice Mary Cooper

WAVES

By Alice Mary Cooper

WAVES By Alice Mary Cooper

Friday, 11 March 2022 @ 7pm

An intimate theatrical event with splashes of humour that tells the story of a life fully lived.

WAVES

Waves follows the story of Alice, a hospice care worker who meets Elizabeth Moncello, the unofficial inventor of the butterfly stroke. Over many cups of tea, Alice learns how Liz, during her youth, taught herself how to swim by watching the aquatic life surrounding her small Victorian island home in the 1930s. With her incredible skill and determination, she makes it to the Berlin Olympics where she introduces the new stroke to the world and wins Gold.

A delightful tale of historical fiction, Waves is an intimate theatrical event that combines highly expressive storytelling, delicate movement and splashes of humour to tell the story of a life fully lived.

Waves is about having an idea and the courage, drive and desire to follow it through, to swim against the tide of history and expectations, and to achieve something that is truly incredible. While the character of Elizabeth is fictional, the work is an homage to the incredible pioneering female swimmers of the early 1900s and women ‘of a certain age’ that society has largely forgotten.

Alice Mary Cooper (Creator & Performer) is an Australian, Edinburgh-based actor, theatre-maker and has been described as ‘a performer and storyteller dedicated to instilling a sense of wonder in her audience.’ (Broadway Baby).  Alice makes work for all ages and is passionate about sustainability and making work that has the environment at its heart. She holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts from Melbourne University and is a graduate of L’Ecole Philippe Gaulier, Paris.  Alice’s show, Waves (‘a miniaturist gem’ The Guardian) has toured extensively including to Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Auckland Arts Festival and New Zealand International.

KING VALLEY ART SHOW … Sadly cancelled for 2021 … but we’ll be back in 2022!

Dear Artists, Friends and Supporters,

It is with sadness and more than a little frustration that we advise you that King Valley Arts has reluctantly decided to cancel the 2021 King Valley Art Show.

Making this decision was hard after we had moved the show from June to October/November to avoid just this eventuality.

King Valley Arts is exploring ideas for small scale art events or shows in the first half of 2022. We will let you know more once sufficient planning has taken place and we have reasonable confidence that sudden lockdowns are unlikely.

Please know that our 2022 King Valley Art Show will take place over Melbourne Cup Weekend. This will be Friday 28 October to Tuesday 1 November 2022.

The KVA committee wish you enjoyment and satisfaction in your artistic endeavours for the remainder of 2021 and onwards.

Please stay well and we hope to show you the wonderful works in the in 2022 Art Show.

Warm regards
